UWA’s men and women’s soccer teams took over Huntsville and Union this past Friday, October 18, 2013. Both the men’s and women’s teams took the field against UAH, and they both walked away with a Gulf South Conference win.
Our Lady Tigers shut out the UAH Chargers, after finishing the game with a final score of 1-0. This shutout was Issy Foster’s fifth of her freshman season. Foster recorded a total of five saves throughout both halves of the game.
Lydia Sutcliffe gave UWA their winning goal halfway through the second half thanks to an assist by freshman Paige Almond. After this victory, the women’s overall record improved 9-4.
Later, our men took the field and earned a 2-0 victory, making for their fifth consecutive win. Trave Torrance gave UWA their first goal and also scored his first goal of the season, with an assist from Thibault Charmey. Charmey scored only ten minutes later, giving him his eighth goal of the season.
On Sunday, UWA traveled to Union, but only the men finished with another GSC victory. The Lady Tigers fell to Union with a score of 1-0. For the men, Defender Alex Brown added his second goal of the season after hitting in a header in the fifty third minute of the game. Charmey gave UWA their final goal of the game in the sixty-third minute with an assist from Christian Adkins. Charmey now has a total of nine goals for his 2013 season.
“I thought we were terrific tonight at pressing the ball and winning it back quickly,” said UWA head women’s soccer coach Graeme Orr. “UAH is a very well coached team, and they make you work extremely hard, so it was a delight to get a big road win.”
Both teams will be back on their own turf this Friday at Tiger Stadium to take on Delta state. Kick off for the women will be at 5 p.m and the men’s game starts at 7 p.m.
