Our West Alabama Lady Tigers swept over Union University on the Pruitt home court Friday Sept. 27, finishing the game with a victory in three straight sets; 25-20, 25-16 and 25-22.
“Tonight was a good match for us to get back on track and get another win in GSC action,” UWA head volleyball coach Jordan Lay said. “Tonight our girls really worked through some tough spots and came out with some good experience.”
Freshman Callie Murphy accomplished a new record high of thirty assists during the three matches against Union.
“Callie is always learning,” Lay said. “Tonight was a great chance for her to overcome mistakes and improve on her game. Tonight was a big accomplishment for any setter, but especially for a freshman.”
Morgan Ray gathered eleven kills and Junior Voyles recorded seven digs.
On Sept. 28, UWA took on Christian Brothers but fell in the fifth set. UWA fell to CBU in sets one and two (25-23, 25-19), but were able to come together as a team and win sets three and four (25-19, 25-21); leaving set five the deciding game of the night.
Again, Ray held the highest kills for the fifth game in a row with a new record high of 22, with an attack percentage of .327
Unfortunatley, UWA fell in the fifth set against CBU suffering a Gulf South Conference loss.
“We battled them in sets three and four to push them to set five, but then we began making the same mistakes we made in the first two sets,” head coach Lay said. “The lesson to take away from this is that we need to come out ready to battle from the very first ball to the last one. I am proud of how the girls responded after being down 2-0 and pushing it to five.”
The West Alabama Lady Tigers will take on UAH, away, Friday Oct. 4 as they continue their 2013 GSC season.
