Livingston, Alabama, does not have a large section of restaurants compared to cities that are extremely populated like Meridian, Miss. and Tuscaloosa, Ala. Therefore, it can become really repetitive going to the same places everyday. What if I told you that there was a place by the interstate where you can eat unique and authentic India cuisine?
Located inside the Texaco gas station of off interstate I-20/59, is a restaurant called Taste of India. They have a wide variety of options that can satisfy your cravings for something different. I thought that Taste of India was just a hole in the wall until I walked in. The establishment was embellished with subtle India culture. The smell was different, but also pleasant. The room was filled with the aroma of herbs and spices, reminding me of some type of cultural potpourri that gave customers an experience other than taste. The tables are glass and elegantly dressed for a sophisticated and classy evening. The server was extremely nice and had full knowledge of every item on the menu. I asked the server what he would recommend and he made no hesitation to point me in the right direction of what was really delicious. You can choose from chicken, lamb or even goat, along with a selection of bread. I had an order of the Garlic Naan, which I highly recommend. This spin on garlic bread was quite refreshing, as it is topped with fresh garlic and spices on what seemed like a cooked slice of bread that was a little thicker than a tortilla. I could not get enough of this bread! I also ordered the Lamb Curry that was a different experience than your Dandy Don’s cheeseburger. I had never tried lamb, but from what I ate, it was really good. I did not eat much of the soup that was served with it, but I did try it with the basmati rice that was served on the side. Along with my meal, I ordered the mango drink, and it was amazing. It was smooth and creamy and had a really good consistent taste of mango. As I finished my meal, I ordered the Gulab Jamon,. which are sweet milk balls soaked in a sweet syrup. I highly recommend ordering some just to try these sweet treats. The price is about the average of your sit down meal at a restaurant, and worth at least giving this restaurant a chance. Overall, I would give my experience a 7/10.
