The softball club traveled to Cleveland, Tenn., to take on the Lee Flames. The Lady Tigers and Flames were scheduled to play a three game series with a double header on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
The first game of the series began at noon and saw the Lady Tigers struggle to defeat Lee. West Alabama lost the first game, resulting in a 13-12 record overall. The second game mirrored the first, with UWA fighting courageously but ultimately in vain. Lee was able to maintain the lead and earn a 5 to 6 victory. “We had a chance to win both games” stated head coach Will Atkinson
On Sunday, the Lady Tigers came out determined to defeat Lee and were able to spring past Lee with a final score of 6 to 5. “We got timely hits today, and that was the name of the game” Atkinson observed. “One pitch changed the game.”
This victory improved the Lady Tigers record to 14-12 overall and 5-7 in the conference.
West Alabama will stay on the road in the upcoming week as they travel to Tuskegee, Ala., to take on the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers on March 11 in a double header beginning at 1p.m. In reference to this game Atkinson stated, “Hopefully we can continue with the effort we had today at Tuskegee.”
Following the trip to Tuskegee, Ala., the Lady Tigers will return home to their own diamond and host GSC conference opponent Valdosta State in a three game series this weekend. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday to begin the double header and 1 p.m. on Sunday to finish off the series.
