The Lady Tiger’s softball team fell to the Valdosta Blazers on Saturday, giving UWA an overall record of 15-15 and a Gulf South Conference record of 5-9.
In the first game on Saturday, the Lady Tigers gave a heartfelt battle. In the bottom of the first junior Jordyn Whiddon had an RBI single to give UWA a 1-0 lead. Then Valdosta battled back in the fourth with two homeruns making the score 4-1.
Then in the bottom of the sixth the Tigers came back. Sophomore Randa Simpson had an RBI single and then senior Taylor Miller added another RBI from a single to give the Tigers a one run deficit.
Senior Anna Shartzer came up to bat and hit a shot for a three run homerun to give the Tigers a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Valdosta however came back in the top of the seventh to steal the game from UWA by scoring four runs on four hits and on two Tiger errors.
Valdosta pitcher Caitlyn Calhoun (5-1) picked up the win after entering in the fourth inning, while UWA senior pitcher Taylor Tucker (1-3) picked up the loss after entering in the top of the seventh.
In the second game Valdosta came out swinging. The only run scored by the Tigers was on a pass ball in bottom of the second. The Blazers scored nine runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings taking a 10-1 lead over the Tigers.
Shartzer lead the Tigers at the plate going 2-for-3. Valdosta’s pitcher Maci Fletcher (7-1) picked up the win, and Tiger’s senior pitcher Sarah Ray-Averett (8-5) picked up the loss.
The third game of the series was cancelled due to extreme flooding on the field. The Tigers will pick up again Tuesday against Stillman in Tuscaloosa.
