Imagine a society divided into groups. Groups who feel that their way of life is the only way to live. Living in a way of selflessness, bravery, honesty, peace or intelligence. Imagine, that at the age of sixteen, children are given a test which decides their way of life. Imagine not being like the other sixteen-year-olds and out witting the simulation test, being told the test didn’t work on you and being labeled with a name that if authorities were to know about, your life would end.

Divergent.

The groups are known as factions: Dauntless, Abnegation, Erudite, Amity and Candor.

Beatrice Prior, sixteen year old Abnegation member, was given a label that was considered to be shameful. After receiving her results from the aptitude test, Prior was informed that she belonged not in one, not in two, but three factions. She was selfless like the Abnegation, the faction she was born into. She was brave like the Dauntless, and she was Intelligent like the Erudite.

On the day of the choosing ceremony, her decision was still unclear. Her brother, Caleb, displayed confidence in knowing where he belonged-Abnegation. Caleb’s name was called, and, after cutting his hand with a knife, he held his hand over the Erudite’s metal bowl, which upset his father and stunned Beatrice. Abnegation rarely chose another faction.

She made her way onto the stage, still in disbelief of her brother’s act of defiance. Beatrice grabbed the knife, cut her palm and closed her eyes. Her blood dripped over the rocks of the Dauntless’ bowl and her life, literally and physically, picked up to fast pace.

The first test of Dauntless initiation happened immediately after the choosing ceremony. The sound of the train grew close as the previous dauntless member ran for an empty set tracks with the new initiates blindly following. The train drove by, but did not slow down. In order to pass the first test, the new initiates had to jump into a cart on a moving train with the other Dauntless members.

Once at the Dauntless headquarters, the initiates were faced with another test. To prove if they really belong as a Dauntless, initiates had to jump off the top of a building, trusting the other members to catch them at the bottom. Prior was given the nickname, Stiff, by an arrogant initiate Peter. The nickname only fueled her desire to fit in and made her step forward first.

At the bottom, a net was held by the Dauntless members. Beatrice hit the net and was given a hand to help her to her feet. When asked for her name, Beatrice decided then and there that it was time for a change.

“First jumper–Tris!”- Four

As she took on her new name and new life, Tris struggled during the Dauntless training and was ranked near the end. The training was broken down into three parts: physical, mental and emotional. She was put in situations yet struggled to decide how to handle them, as her Abnegation lifestyle and label Divergent still haunted her. She pushed both sides away, ignoring who she used to be and who she really was.

Tris struggled in the fighting stage. Her petite body had no strength to fight back until her leader, Four, gave her a few fighting tips. From that moment, Tris was infatuated by him. Her crush for him grew during each little encounter, leaving her wanting more.

Four held back his interest for Tris because of his position, but was forced to ignore his leading role as he noticed Tris’ true self; selfless, brave and beautiful.

For another test, initiates were given a serum that forced them to face their fears. Unlike the rest, Tris convinced herself during the test that it wasn’t real, which calmed her heart rate down and was finished in a time that the other initiates were nowhere close to meeting.

Tris’ test raised concern within the authorities, but Four altered each test for Tris’ safety. Only Four knew she was Divergent and he did whatever it took to keep it that way.

As she embraced her Dauntless side, Tris advanced in the rankings and became a target in the eyes of her jealous class of initiates. She out fought the other initiates, even males, and was able to outwit every serum test she was administered. After finishing first in her class, Tris thought her life as a true Dauntless member would begin.

It did, but not in the way she had hope.

Erudite had been building an army among the Dauntless members by secretly administering a serum that controlled the mind and forced them to fight when triggered. Only the Divergent were able to withstand the serum, but Tris  learns that she was not alone.

Another Dauntless member revealed their Divergence and joined Tris in taking down the Erudite leader, but failed at first, sending Tris to her death and capturing the other Divergent.

An unlikely hero saved Tris, allowing her a second chance to save all factions from the Erudite leader and to save the other Divergent.

Before her final battle, Tris realized who she really was.

“I am not Abnegation. I am not Dauntless. I am Divergent. And I can’t be controlled.”-Tris
