There is only one week left in GSC college hoops before the big conference dance in Birmingham, Ala.
The UWA men’s basketball team hosted Alabama-Huntsville on Feb. 18 while they traveled to Dayton, Tenn., to compete against Lee on Feb. 20. The Tigers were not able to defeat both teams but they did defeat Alabama- Huntsville at Pruitt Hall. The final score, in a defeat that has not happened in seven years according to uwaathletics.com, was UWA 65 and Alabama-Huntsville 53. Two days after a key conference home win, they were defeated by Lee by a score of Lee 71 and UWA 69. The live game recap proves to show that this game was truly a nail biter.
The UWA women’s basketball team also played the same teams on the same dates. The Lady Tigers were defeated by Alabama-Huntsville 84-95 and took a loss to Lee as well by score of Lee 79 and UWA 48.
Both teams only have two more games coming up to determine their fate in the GSC Tourney.
The 2014 NCAA Division II South Region standings have been announced, and for the first time in university history since 1994, the UWA men’s basketball team has been ranked in the regional standings. The Tigers are ranked at number five in the region. This ranking will help determine seeds when it comes down to NCAA Division II tournament after the GSC tournament, which is known as a part of March Madness Hoops.
The Tigers and Lady Tigers alike will host The University of North Alabama on Feb. 27 and Union University March 1 at Pruitt Hall on our campus to close out the 2014 regular basketball season. Two wins will provide great momentum for both squads as they go on to compete the following week in the GSC Tournament.
The Lady Tigers enter their last week of regular season play with a record of (4-20) overall with a (1-17) conference record. The Tigers now possess a (15-9) overall and (12-6) conference record for this season.
